Tutorial Task 8 - Advanced Word techniques

Even though we use Microsoft so regularly I never realized these capabilities. Mail merge is amazing. It was a little bit confusing in the beginning. I could get through the topic fast and felt it very easy. It is basically dealing with formatting techniques and how we could send a perfect formatted Professional mail to apply for a job to a company.

We could virtually do anything with word in regard to the text aspect. It was cool i felt this tute easy and not much to speak off.

Lecture Session 8 - The internet and cyber-democracy

What is democracy?
We have the people who rule the place in a political sense and their opinion.

How is media affecting democracy?
We have learnt that it is through media we know what is going around in a country and who to vote for or against. We know when there is an election or when a rule has been implemented. The common people have depended so much over the media, that they are forgetting that the media again is being controlled by few people and not everything they represent may be true. The true democracy is based on mass opinion media has the power to manipulate this situation. To resolve this we have multiple sources of media or information. A scandal of a Hollywood star has reached and multiplied over 6, 00,000 time in a single day. That is where the internet comes in. a medium that has a world wide source of information. If we need to find out accurate information it could be done by comparing it from multiple sources.

We have had a topic on free speech and censorship
An argument which could not be resolved on perfect sense, there are both good and bad on both sides. Pornography on the internet cannot be controlled because of this and again we could not get accurate information that is not controlled by anyone.

Finally I would opine that internet is one medium that could achieve a perfect democracy. Not only regional but also globally.

Microsoft Excel - Tutorial Task 7

It was amazing, even though I only knew how to use the cells to calculate stuff. I never knew how to build graphs, it’s been a while and the software has developed a lot. It’s good to be back to recollect the information that has been updated.

It was easy dealing with the exercise in the beginning because I was familiar with it. But from the advance exercises I liked how we can use macros and create our own tool bars to develop functionality based on just recording the stuff.

I am familiar with macros again but I don’t like to use them because there are usually
A lot of errors appear or may be I have not done it right. Again it’s a nice experience to spend time to get into this stuff.

We could graphically present complex and simple stuff that has something to do with bulk calculations like daily budget personal or for the whole company.

Session 7 - Video Games

All kids like to play video games, the effects are crazy. I am taking me as an example I have played the play station for a two days straight without eating anything taking small breaks to the loo. If this is what a simple video game has an effect on minds of people why not educated them using this? The video games could be a new media for communication to represent the new ideas or real entities.

It’s often from a very physiological perspective.

We have discussed that there are two types of approaches that we have acknowledged so far in an academic approach of video games.

Narratology- just stories or the work of what it wants to say through the game
Ludology – something that is more concerned about the graphics or quality of the game

Video games form the basis to virtuality the movie Existence shows how people can log into the system to play games in an absolute virtual world, which cannot differentiate between real or virtual worlds.

Lecture Session 6 - Current applications...Open Source

After a rough week end from moving from my old beautiful place to an unfurnished place in Southport, I am pretty Tiered. As a refresh of the gap this lecture started off with a re-cap of what we have done so far…
1. Technology is used for communication it becomes a medium
2. History of computer and internet the moments that lead to everyday experiences with them
3. The kinds of approaches the inter-related nature or culture.
4. Philosophical – About reality very ancient approach of Steve Stockwell
5. How the things go down the streets of the internet and the capabilities by nelson
6. As of today…

Instant Messaging ICQ was popular. Msn was in the market much later. IRC internet relay chat was popular in the early ages of chatting. They made it huge. I still remember the first time I had the ICQ account and used to communicate with my friends. But I don’t believe that there were so many friends that we could get in touch because internet was just a teenager then growing its abilities and what it can offer. I believe it was not even a big subject to learn about then.
Portable Audio and Pod Casting – well who has the smallest Walkman, or which brad one had was one of the show offs that we friends had amongst ourselves to be cool. The apple made a come back and yes it made it huge from this little application that could carry MP3 songs and was getting so famous it’s called IPOD. The amazing part is that these became so popular every kid wants one. The sales for a recent 6,451,000 iPods during the quarter, representing 48 percent growth in Macs and 220 percent growth in iPods over the year-ago quarter. This is one big impact over the technology trends fashion market. (Debbie Kruger date visited 29 NOV 2006, http://www.apple.com/au/pr/library/2005/oct/11results.html)
There are other Piracy issues of multiplying Mp3 at an amazing rate which is not at all fair for the music developers and publishers. How to stop this is? What can we do about it is a total big mainstream under Piracy prevention ways.
It is not only music we can have even videos running downloads over these cute white pods.
P2P: Peer to peer Networks is main reason for this fuelling of the piracy of music and video. The technique of downloading or transferring files over the internet from another computer using FTP was been around for a while but applications like the then Napster and the now Kazza and Lime wire.
In this name of Piracy little people or kids who are not at all mature enough to understand the effects of Piracy have been fines or sued heavily. People are cry about Censorship to save everyone from these incidents.
It’s about Intellectual Property and copyright laws.
VOIP and voice Chat – old mediums to evolve into new mediums. If we could speak over the internet for as cheap as free than on the old medium like the telephone which is pretty expensive then what would happen to the companies like Telstra. Will it break the monopoly of them or because they have the power they may even restrict their servers that would obviously cut the VOIP conversations.
Free Open Source Software:
Microsoft and other monopolies should be strongly opposed, but how? Imposing special laws for such companies may not be fair but again giving so much power to one company for a service would be threat for the innovation advancements.
The amazing part of the reverse Engineering technique is look at the function or an ability of looking at the way it works and develop your own programs to achieve it. It’s fair according to Australia Copy right Laws.
The other things to cut down monopolies are the free software that is provided by open source developers where you could build on and modify it and use it. The best way is to encourage these for public and private uses, a true form of democracy in the software industry.

Net Art - Lecture summary 5

First of all I would like to say that this lecture was more practical and more of what stuff goes on over the net. Nelson has had an amazing way of explaining stuff to us. The wows of internet and the amazing effects of the most of the companies that actually involved in computers going online who invested huge without actually knowing it capabilities and how that lead to the crash of the Dot com industry itself.

The largest industries that have survived the Dot com bust were the Gambling industry and the Porn industry.

Other individual companies that made it huge were the music industries and EBay and Msn Yahoo or let’s say the advertising industry Google who uses search techniques. Journalism is also steadily inclining itself to the dot com sector.

We had a trip to Nelson’s website that reflected how we can use the web as a tool for Creative Art, the basic idea of an art gallery. If there was a physical art gallery the people that could visit it would be say an amazingly whooping 4000 at the most. But if you have the same online and did a little bit of advertising it would bring amazing thousands of visitors for each day. The best part is you could design 3 dimensional arts with just the use of computers you need not be skilled in drawing or painting at all. Nelson’s art work was amazing.

And again he reflected that earning through the internet is like earning over the street that you are used to for a log time and should be able to play gimmicks. Such as the million dollar homepage website that actually used a concept of selling pixels on his website for a million dollars and made it on the news and it did work.
Booms and wows can take place much effectively online was the main concept that I could get from the lecture and I also believe we learnt many secret techniques or doorways of only a internet freak would be able to explain to us.

The difference I have felt in the kinds of socialising of a 3d environment and an IM (instant messenger) – Tutorial Task 4

First I would like to describe what an IM does and it capability and how I feel using it.

IM is an application that can be downloaded on to our system. That allows us to communicate in the Real world sense. We type in text and our friend who is also a member and also has the program on his system would instantly receive it. So we can write messages to each other just like speaking. These days IM s are equipped with VOIP technology where we can see each other LIVE over a web cam and have a voice chat using a mic or a speaker.

We can meet our friends and speak to them over long distances. We feel that we have not missed each other. We could do some serious stuff communication. If we don’t have a web Cam or a headset IM s are pretty boring because we could not perfectly express the tone of our feelings. There is somehow a way of representation of little textual graphic icons that appear just to make it fun expressing feel the most common feelings. The best part of IM is that as the name indicates fast communication.

Let’s have a look into what a 3D world is

Worlds where you are an avatar a comical person who could walk, fly, or do things around, its more control and flexibility over the body of being able to express and do things that you could do in a real world. The application needs a heavy bandwidth and a good fast computer to load those heavy graphics. Apart from the technical side even a 3D world looks more kiddish, you don’t feel it’s real. You feel like you are playing a game than for a purpose oriented communication. It is fun though. There is a lot of work that needs to be done to make it more realistic. May be then there are wider range of applications for it. The avatar should actually be you instead of a comical 3D already created avatar by the program. Your identity in a 3D world again is based on something like a name that is textual. It is harder to identify some one by just looking at the face of the avatar. Even thought there is much to be done it is still extremely creative.

Virtual philosophy - Lecture summary 4

The concept of what is real and how we can identify and define these topics has always been very arguable. Concepts over concepts such as if all that a brain can capture is real then how about the techniques that can be achieved by the movie if possible Johnny mnemonic who sheds his memory of his child hood to carry some information that he does not know. If it is possible to manipulate memories then a person in a state of manipulated behaviour could never identify what a real thing is he just accepts that what is fed in his memory is real. The matrix shows that all of our lives we have been manipulated and have been living in a virtual world, by the machines for getting energy from us so since the beginning to the end of a human’s life s/he is kept in this world assuming to be real. The third man perspective is very important in these issues where is it going and how it can be judged can be decided by a person who is watching from a place that does not involve him. Deliberate acceptance is the only way to solve these issues it is more of a feeling that has power over such concepts.

Few seconds of involvement in a horror movie or an interesting game like Doom would make us forget that we exist in the current physical world that we have accepted before starting the game. When the game or the movie begins our involvement is so much that we consider it to be real, that is our feelings tend to react to the events that are going on the screen. Such small events could make us forget our existence for a while. All that we need to be ready is for we should be able to defend in a situation of what would happen in the future when a technology of say a realistic virtual world or adding and deleting of memories comes into existence. The concept the difference of real and virtuality should have been able to be identified then.

My understanding of the Search Engine - Session 3 – Tutorial Task

(How stuff works. com)
Any website is mainly for an information display or processing. Something like a book. The more information you put on the book the larger it becomes and the time consumed is more to find a specific interesting topic in that book. So that’s where we developed a process of having few pages usually at the end of the book as an index of key words and their reference to them in the book. The same applies to a search engine. On entering a key word, the search machine looks into the tons and millions of website pages and finds all the pages in its database in its relation to that key word.

General ranking of web pages
Before we find out how the pages are ranked we need to find out how it gets or finds a webpage. To find those billions of pages and storing an index of keywords is possible to my knowledge in two ways.

1> A manual entry made by the website owner to submit himself to a popular search engine by listing the key words in his web page.
2> Robotic – Bots know as spiders – go to each page starting from popular ones and listing the keywords automatically. This is called web crawling.

Now since we could get the index of words its relevance importance in a context is what ranking is all about.
This may be that the page has more of the same words. Or the context of the string entered matched exactly with the content of the page.

Different search engines have different ways to manipulate placing the position of one website over the other. It is usually the priority that does that process such as weight of the word and where it appears – like the heading, sub heading, links, metatags or the title of the webpage itself

Unacceptably Google has been my favourite search engine. But there are other that are really good that I use for different purposes such as the Cnet search engine for downloadable new software or games. Rediff.com for current affairs in India like the latest up to date news and ebay.com for shopping online and yahoo just because it pops up if the URL that you entered was wrong.

Why Google – as a bachelor’s student of IT I do know the depths of how Google searches for information. The prominent bulk of results and the number of people using it makes it very popular. It is also a trend of technology. It even connects book publishers and articles in universities that may be important for academical purposes.

Latest news about Google

It is extending it services from just a mere search engine to various other communication technologies over the internet. It’s coming up with an online book store. The largest and giant Net companies against Google are Microsoft and Yahoo. (Source: The BBC searched from Google news)

History of computers and the internet - Summary of lecture 2

The birth of the computer and its history how it came to what we call those boxes that we see around as of today.
It was Babbage who is called the father of computer but the concept of computing has always been since the birth of mankind. We could discover it only recently and make it as a specific concept. Turing used a toilet paper example of symbols such as zeros and ones to perform a mathematical additional task just by following some rules.
He is the one that gave the concepts to the actual computers that we see as of today. The great IBM and Microsoft combined their hardware and software recourses to produce computers commercially for a common man. There have been many controversies because of the money and economy involved. The fact that a machine that could perform some simple mathematical tasks that filled up says a large room during Babbage’s time is now weighing say 100gms (such as the laptops) could perform thousands of same mathematical tasks simultaneously.

What was the next step, we could do amazing stuff with these computers all we need is to share them. That’s where the internet comes in. Beginning as a tool to connect resources over few universities in the U.S.A that was funded by the army it is as of today connecting millions of people around the globe. Communication has become the vital purpose of the internet. The internet has evolved into a new communication medium.

Introduction - Summary of the first Lecture

Humans have a boon a gift of knowledge, and to use what they learnt in a way for further survival. What they learnt can be an experience or a concept or may even be a creation of a tool for a purpose. Learning is a process that it is based on the effects that appeared in the past and also the conceptual analysation of how it would affect the future. All this is nothing but Technology. New technology survives on using it for a purpose. Without a purpose a piece of technology is useless. Or let’s say it can never be called a technology in the first place.

Things get complex, we need control over them so we use something like technology to take control, and in this lecture I have learnt the various technologies in relation to digitalisation or let’s say something that can not be achieved without the help of a computer.

Since computers are something to do with how we think and how we used our memory or a process which calculates complex mathematical stuff or something that can use the capabilities of another physical technology in repeating it as a bulk, say something like the telephone and the internet that was actually achieved by the computers on the basis of communication technology of basic telephone. So as of today technology could be based on mingling of multiple technologies together.

Since then the applications have gone wide enough, great people could obviously calculate what would be know as the future. The creative minds could represent stuff to general applications of a technology such as in the movies could give a purpose to how a technology could be further used and give it an abstract purpose. Where is this all leading to?

It is obviously interaction of these technologies that we are concentrating on. So as of today you could just be sitting in a garage and create a tool that could be distributed world wide and create a revolution. To do that we need to know where or what our technology is for or again know a purpose of a technology that we want to create.

Communication technology is one of those technologies that was developed and sill developing as of today. I could speak to my parents over a chat program form Australia to India instantly I can even see them through a web cam and speak to them through the internet. It’s like a fantasy world coming real. All we are doing her is speaking to machine through words to make this possible, mingling of multiple technologies again. Like webcam, mic , speaker are all different technologies that are coming together using computers.

We have the power of converting basic words that is otherwise called programs or in larger aspect called software to let machines themselves to speak with us. There is an application of what I am speaking about say Chat Bots. Some thing you could speak with as a friend, but actually it’s been controlled by a machine its creation lies in basic words. The lecture emphasis the combination of communication, different media, interactive means and computing technologies as a convergence.

Media - Lecture session 3 summary (source lecture)

A summary of Lecture Session 3 – All about Media

It was in Germany a little fellow could raise bloody racial mass murders and a reason to the one of the bloodiest wars fought, the World War II. This short comical appearance person's ideologies were pretty rough and disastrous. Now how could mere words affect huge masses to take an action? We are indeed speaking about non other than Hitler. He had tremendous communication skills.

Concentrating on the fact that his words could make people take an action means not all the people were really effected by his ideologies or like them, but think it this way. He was a medium that was used to actually raise few thought and manipulate them over to the masses by few people who liked his ideologies as a solution. What he did later with this power is all history.

Hitler was a medium of communication.

Today journalist and the news papers are a kind of medium having the different kinds of effects on the general public. It is the way in which we communicate through. The new technologies like the internet is it a medium – may be-
An intervening substance through which something else is transmitted or carried on

There is whole new study on these communication media (plural for medium) and its effects. There are even subdivisions in these studies such as media studies, journalism or cultural studies.

We are ending up with different kinds of branches as we are narrowing a topic down.

We could look into the concepts and the studies and the effects it has over the masses has been put forward mainly from two cultural backgrounds the U.S.A and the Europe.

The historic view of accepted and argued theories-
1990 - Ferdinand - semiotics- cultural texts
1920 - Bullet theory - every one is affected in the same way with mass media
1930 - It was more a statistical method in media studies. Very much mathematical
1940 - If it does not affect every one the same way what is the minimum effect.
1950 - We look in to the psychology of a medium, like how advertising affects others & how kids are affected, like violence and politics; it was more dynamic in nature.
1960 – Canadian guy – Marshall
- He looked into literary style, can we use the psychology and statistics in media studies. They were very revolutionary ideas. The effects of media were lot more after that.
1970 – Mixed effects – cultivation hypnosis - people perceive things can be shaped by the media like politics, like the war in Iraq
Issues that are put the news papers can pop up in the agenda for discussion and could also be referred by Politian as in such as political campaign.
The new points, that it affects all. It is a multiple effect.
1980 – Maximum Effects – media can become a public effect, we just accept passively the bombardment from it.
- The fact that we can put a web log has also become a channel of an output.

So far that was the time line of media in the U.S

Let’s go back and take a look of the time line in Europe and how things went down there with the media studies.

1930 – In contemporary media studies are a work of art. Say photography, cinema when you look at them it has authenticity, it’s aura as we reproduce it mechanically that cheapens the authenticity of the actual value. What value is a Mona Lisa picture with Homer Simsons face in it?
This is what is happening in this digital world
1940 – Frankfurt School – some of the famous guys here studied that media has an effect in a philosophical effect the real life is becoming more like in movies. The movies just push you to accept it to be real.
1950 – Guy Debord – we should get out there and do stuff. He advices to stop thinking and do of more applying. Every day experiences have a represent of what our life is all about.
1960 – the public life is really shaped from public opinion in little places or gathering that would be a major influence.
Public Environment where a middle class influencing the political forces and journalism transforms the message
1970 – louis – the idea of state apparatuses – he would suggest our connection to the stat is an imaginary relation ship
1980 – Something Marshall did- the real mass media that effected globally. We have been so used to see reality end up in an imaginary world
1990 – Constructive reality, and pushing the agenda and bombardment we need to strike back, we should look at a different public sphere

In Australia we have our influences from both Europe and U.S ideologies.

New Media, Internet Studies and cyber culture studies
- If we worked out what media studies is – then what is new media studies – is it a new medium or is it a new version of an old version of the medium

- Early 90’s internet began to be used as a tool of communication across continents. Globalization
- The early book and writings over the internet were more descriptive,
- The internet is good because … it is bad because … there is a balance within its creation.
- There is a failure to see it is a media tool, it is used more for recreation purposes
- CMC – computer mediated communication
- Anything starts with e or cyber is related to a material produced online over a computer and distributed over the internet

Culture of the Internet - Tutorial 2

My use of communication Technologies and when it all began

I was a computer geek since the year 1992 I still remember the first time I was using the BASIC language and the famous drawing game named “logo” totally command based game.

But time passed extremely fast and not until the year 2000 the big Y2K problem that things started going online over the internet.
I had a Y2K problem for myself too. It was time to part from my school friends with whom I have lived for the past ten beautiful years. The Hyderabad Public School 200acres, a huge place for a school situated right in the heart of the city Hyderabad India. The amazing experiences and memories in this place were all coming to an end.

I was wondering is there a way I would still be in touch with the people I have grown up with. I was desperate to find any opportunity that would still keep us together. After long hours of surfing the NET cause Google was not much a talk then. I came across a site named BodhTree groups now it’s called yahoo groups. I tried to get my friends email ids and did all the signing up process for them as no one was aware of how stuff works. I cannot blame them internet was just getting popular then. And the unbearably slow dialup speeds discouraged my every effort to team up.

I worked hard to put up, and my friends cooperated with me as well, so slow that it would take an hour to load a page. I had no choice but to look for easier ways to implement this. But time was a major factor. I could not make it. But again in the effort I had all their email contacts and that was the most popular way to keep in touch.

Use of new communication technologies to communicate with friends and family

Time passed and technology and the internet were getting cheaper in India. The Messenger ICQ, Yahoo, Msn were all breakthroughs that were looked into then, as I said I was the first to grab the stuff and my friends were still unaware of the most.

After two years email was still the popular method that was a primary way to communicate with my school friends. I had to move to Australia and I could easily explain to my mom who is a doctor and totally unaware of the technology, about the use of voice over IP technology using a yahoo messenger and the offline messages that would always keep us in touch. This saved me thousands of dollars for communication. Since then I had another responsibility, the need to give my attendance over the net to speak with her every day at a particular time. This applied to my close school friends as well.

Friends whom I only know from the internet and have never met in person

When I was in India after I left school, I came across weird stuff my hunger for new technology grew no bounds and I used to spend days in front of my desktop. The chat rooms included a lot of stuff that interests a guy like me. The hackers as they were called opened up rooms online and I came to know many of them as I called myself one to boast off. I learnt a lot of things about hacking, virus, worms and other stuff. I used to trade information to get to know new things by letting know the fellow hackers what I knew. We developed something called our own ethics in dealing this stuff. I came across fantasy stories of how giant corporations were being fooled and manipulated or said that they were by the hackers. The famous stories were about the crashing of stock exchange and the AT&T crash down in the U.S.A. I have never been to U.S but I came to know a lot about them through a little box sitting right on the other side of the globe.

The difference to people that I know in person

I had developed online friends who claim to live all over the world. I know them only by their handle names such as ‘compking’ and ‘botcrasher’. They did exist for me because the time I spent online was considerable. I came to know more about them but nothing was personal. We exchanged stuff. We did use certain methods that worked. Like the Brute Force techniques that would use a dictionary to find out the actual passwords of an email id. I did play around with some of my real friend’s email accounts and considered it to be fun looking at the after effects, nothing harmful at all.

But there is a difference there is no emotional feeling that I had with the friends I know for real and the ones I have known online. When a friend who I know online did not show up one day I never felt bad I just thought that he was just a passing cloud. But even to this day I have an effect of missing my school friends.

For me the online friends were something like a saying from the movie God Father

“It’s not personal it’s strictly business.”

If you ask me today I cannot even precisely tell the exact things we did, just a vague description of how things went with my online friends.

The After effects of the way I saw new communication technology and my use over them in my later years

It was when the movie Matrix 2 and 3 released that gave a breakthrough in my philosophical thinking about computers. The extreme level of what can be done with computers and how they can be implemented. I wanted to learn more about them in a professional level and Off I was in an international flight to Australia the gold coast to Griffith University.

Since I have come here it was more boring and the life I knew with computers was going extremely slow. I came to be more of a socializing person that the one sitting on computers all day. Broadband was pretty expensive in Australia one of the things that opposed my eagerness to learn new stuff. I still speak digitally over IM with my family and friends and it was more like a tool than something to learn. I took it for granted and at times when I could not get any access to computers I would know its value only for a short time. Most of the lectures and stuff I learnt in bachelors are all to do with computers and over computers. So I could not feel the presence of its existence.

It was with the Booming Blast of Google, which introduced its famous Google earth software that attracted me towards online technologies once more. I regained my senses and had a lot of catching up to do but there is so much stuff that I missed out I came to realize that it is impossible to seek every technology that is around I should just simply go with the flow.

The funny part is that one of my school mates who knows nothing about computers and is doing a math degree in India opened up a forum group in Orkut a Google group site and I found out all my school friends over there waiting for me to join.
My idea of bringing my friends together was a success after two years. What I wanted to implement had happened with much ease without the entire struggle that I have put in, without any technical skills in that field. It just happened.

To finally comment on new technology it was IRC before, IM yesterday and You Tube today who can even judge which technology could just pop out and become popular all of a sudden.

What I mean to say is that I was aware of all these new technologies years back and even had accounts in every single service that was provided for free. The actual time and the use of a particular communication technology to boom are never expected.

What kinds of technologies to be used were based more on something to become popular because of other co-relating stuff. It may have been internet speeds or the right implementation at the right time.

So much all we can do is go with what you need. We need to be more flexible and use what is booming. You can never be a head and think that everyone would change and use the technology that you are using though it is pretty advanced and you could never fall back and stick to the same old technology. Change of use must come in the right time.
