(How stuff works. com)
Any website is mainly for an information display or processing. Something like a book. The more information you put on the book the larger it becomes and the time consumed is more to find a specific interesting topic in that book. So that’s where we developed a process of having few pages usually at the end of the book as an index of key words and their reference to them in the book. The same applies to a search engine. On entering a key word, the search machine looks into the tons and millions of website pages and finds all the pages in its database in its relation to that key word.
General ranking of web pages
Before we find out how the pages are ranked we need to find out how it gets or finds a webpage. To find those billions of pages and storing an index of keywords is possible to my knowledge in two ways.
1> A manual entry made by the website owner to submit himself to a popular search engine by listing the key words in his web page.
2> Robotic – Bots know as spiders – go to each page starting from popular ones and listing the keywords automatically. This is called web crawling.
Now since we could get the index of words its relevance importance in a context is what ranking is all about.
This may be that the page has more of the same words. Or the context of the string entered matched exactly with the content of the page.
Different search engines have different ways to manipulate placing the position of one website over the other. It is usually the priority that does that process such as weight of the word and where it appears – like the heading, sub heading, links, metatags or the title of the webpage itself
Unacceptably Google has been my favourite search engine. But there are other that are really good that I use for different purposes such as the Cnet search engine for downloadable new software or games. Rediff.com for current affairs in India like the latest up to date news and ebay.com for shopping online and yahoo just because it pops up if the URL that you entered was wrong.
Why Google – as a bachelor’s student of IT I do know the depths of how Google searches for information. The prominent bulk of results and the number of people using it makes it very popular. It is also a trend of technology. It even connects book publishers and articles in universities that may be important for academical purposes.
