Culture of the Internet - Tutorial 2

My use of communication Technologies and when it all began

I was a computer geek since the year 1992 I still remember the first time I was using the BASIC language and the famous drawing game named “logo” totally command based game.

But time passed extremely fast and not until the year 2000 the big Y2K problem that things started going online over the internet.
I had a Y2K problem for myself too. It was time to part from my school friends with whom I have lived for the past ten beautiful years. The Hyderabad Public School 200acres, a huge place for a school situated right in the heart of the city Hyderabad India. The amazing experiences and memories in this place were all coming to an end.

I was wondering is there a way I would still be in touch with the people I have grown up with. I was desperate to find any opportunity that would still keep us together. After long hours of surfing the NET cause Google was not much a talk then. I came across a site named BodhTree groups now it’s called yahoo groups. I tried to get my friends email ids and did all the signing up process for them as no one was aware of how stuff works. I cannot blame them internet was just getting popular then. And the unbearably slow dialup speeds discouraged my every effort to team up.

I worked hard to put up, and my friends cooperated with me as well, so slow that it would take an hour to load a page. I had no choice but to look for easier ways to implement this. But time was a major factor. I could not make it. But again in the effort I had all their email contacts and that was the most popular way to keep in touch.

Use of new communication technologies to communicate with friends and family

Time passed and technology and the internet were getting cheaper in India. The Messenger ICQ, Yahoo, Msn were all breakthroughs that were looked into then, as I said I was the first to grab the stuff and my friends were still unaware of the most.

After two years email was still the popular method that was a primary way to communicate with my school friends. I had to move to Australia and I could easily explain to my mom who is a doctor and totally unaware of the technology, about the use of voice over IP technology using a yahoo messenger and the offline messages that would always keep us in touch. This saved me thousands of dollars for communication. Since then I had another responsibility, the need to give my attendance over the net to speak with her every day at a particular time. This applied to my close school friends as well.

Friends whom I only know from the internet and have never met in person

When I was in India after I left school, I came across weird stuff my hunger for new technology grew no bounds and I used to spend days in front of my desktop. The chat rooms included a lot of stuff that interests a guy like me. The hackers as they were called opened up rooms online and I came to know many of them as I called myself one to boast off. I learnt a lot of things about hacking, virus, worms and other stuff. I used to trade information to get to know new things by letting know the fellow hackers what I knew. We developed something called our own ethics in dealing this stuff. I came across fantasy stories of how giant corporations were being fooled and manipulated or said that they were by the hackers. The famous stories were about the crashing of stock exchange and the AT&T crash down in the U.S.A. I have never been to U.S but I came to know a lot about them through a little box sitting right on the other side of the globe.

The difference to people that I know in person

I had developed online friends who claim to live all over the world. I know them only by their handle names such as ‘compking’ and ‘botcrasher’. They did exist for me because the time I spent online was considerable. I came to know more about them but nothing was personal. We exchanged stuff. We did use certain methods that worked. Like the Brute Force techniques that would use a dictionary to find out the actual passwords of an email id. I did play around with some of my real friend’s email accounts and considered it to be fun looking at the after effects, nothing harmful at all.

But there is a difference there is no emotional feeling that I had with the friends I know for real and the ones I have known online. When a friend who I know online did not show up one day I never felt bad I just thought that he was just a passing cloud. But even to this day I have an effect of missing my school friends.

For me the online friends were something like a saying from the movie God Father

“It’s not personal it’s strictly business.”

If you ask me today I cannot even precisely tell the exact things we did, just a vague description of how things went with my online friends.

The After effects of the way I saw new communication technology and my use over them in my later years

It was when the movie Matrix 2 and 3 released that gave a breakthrough in my philosophical thinking about computers. The extreme level of what can be done with computers and how they can be implemented. I wanted to learn more about them in a professional level and Off I was in an international flight to Australia the gold coast to Griffith University.

Since I have come here it was more boring and the life I knew with computers was going extremely slow. I came to be more of a socializing person that the one sitting on computers all day. Broadband was pretty expensive in Australia one of the things that opposed my eagerness to learn new stuff. I still speak digitally over IM with my family and friends and it was more like a tool than something to learn. I took it for granted and at times when I could not get any access to computers I would know its value only for a short time. Most of the lectures and stuff I learnt in bachelors are all to do with computers and over computers. So I could not feel the presence of its existence.

It was with the Booming Blast of Google, which introduced its famous Google earth software that attracted me towards online technologies once more. I regained my senses and had a lot of catching up to do but there is so much stuff that I missed out I came to realize that it is impossible to seek every technology that is around I should just simply go with the flow.

The funny part is that one of my school mates who knows nothing about computers and is doing a math degree in India opened up a forum group in Orkut a Google group site and I found out all my school friends over there waiting for me to join.
My idea of bringing my friends together was a success after two years. What I wanted to implement had happened with much ease without the entire struggle that I have put in, without any technical skills in that field. It just happened.

To finally comment on new technology it was IRC before, IM yesterday and You Tube today who can even judge which technology could just pop out and become popular all of a sudden.

What I mean to say is that I was aware of all these new technologies years back and even had accounts in every single service that was provided for free. The actual time and the use of a particular communication technology to boom are never expected.

What kinds of technologies to be used were based more on something to become popular because of other co-relating stuff. It may have been internet speeds or the right implementation at the right time.

So much all we can do is go with what you need. We need to be more flexible and use what is booming. You can never be a head and think that everyone would change and use the technology that you are using though it is pretty advanced and you could never fall back and stick to the same old technology. Change of use must come in the right time.
